Mesothelioma Patients: Early Detection Is Key
Mesothelioma can be challenging to detect. Early detection is important for proper and effective treatment. One of the tests that can be used to detect mesothelioma is a computed tomography scan or CT scan. It is important to tell your doctor about any history of asbestos exposure, as mesothelioma is rare and can easily be misidentified as other forms of cancer or respiratory diseases that are more common.
What Is a CT Scan?
A computed tomography scan (CT scan or CAT scan) is a three-dimensional image of the inside of your body. An X-ray takes one image; a CT scan compiles numerous cross-sectional pictures that are then combined by a computer to create a fuller picture. It provides views of any unusual, abnormal, or concerning growths, including cancer.
CT Scans & Pleural Mesothelioma
The pleura is the lining around the lungs. Pleural mesothelioma is cancer of the pleura. One of the common symptoms of mesothelioma is pleural fluid, which means excess fluid around the lungs. For pleural mesothelioma, CT scans are the preferred test, as these images can pick up evidence of pleural thickening. Approximately 75% of mesothelioma cases are pleural mesothelioma.
Other symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include:
- Dry coughing
- Coughing up blood
- Shortness of breath
- Sudden weight loss
- Feelings of exhaustion or fatigue
- Pain or difficulty breathing
- Lower back pain
- Pain in the rib area
- Lumps on the chest felt through the skin
- Night sweats / fever
