Philadelphia School Classroom Filled With Asbestos, Lead Dust

The Philadelphia Inquirer recently published an article detailing the terrifying state of Room 106 at A.S. Jenks Elementary.

According to the article, the teacher who uses that classroom, Maria Greco, dealt with crumbling plaster, suspicious black splotches, and peeling paint for years before the School District of Philadelphia informed her that a team of painters to repair the plaster and paint in December of 2017.

However, Greco reported that she returned to a complete mess, instead of the cleaned up classroom she was expecting. Paint on the walls was still flaking, white dust was covering the floor and desks, and there was a five-foot gouge dug into the asbestos tile floor. A district staffer swabbed a small area of the floor to use for testing, and the results that came back were staggering: 1.15 million asbestos fibers per square centimeter. 100,000 fibers per square centimeter is considered the amount that requires immediate action. Room 106 was left uncleaned and in disarray after these results came back, and The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that it remains that way as recently as Tuesday, June 12.

You can see photos from the classroom on The Philadelphia Inquirer’s article here.
