Bartash Printing Inc. Agrees to Pay $305,000 Over Wage Violations

Jun 8, 2017

Bartash Printing Inc. agreed to pay $273,892 in liquidated damages and back wages to 136 temporary employees and a $31,350 civil penalty after an investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor found that they violated the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

The Philadelphia commercial printer reportedly shorted wages of employees working as general laborers and machine operators, violating multiple FLSA provisions covering recordkeeping, overtime and minimum wage statutes.

The consent judgement from earlier this year marks an end to the legal battle surrounding complaints including paying workers $6.25 per hour in cash, nearly 14 percent lower than the federal minimum wage, failing to ensure that workers received overtime pay when they worked more than 40 hours in a week and failing to maintain accurate payroll records.

“[I]t illustrates their responsibility to ensure that these temporary workers are being paid in compliance with the law,” said James Cain, the director of the Department of Labor’s wage and hour division in Philadelphia.
