Veterans Oppose Bill That Harms Asbestos Victims

Jan 20, 2016

On Monday, the House of Representatives passed a bill known as the FACT Act. What this does is make it more difficult for individuals dealing with mesothelioma or other asbestos-triggered conditions to obtain compensation from the corporations liable for the exposure. This is bound to cause unjust financial hardships for many veterans and their families.

Of the countless individuals dealing with mesothelioma, roughly one-third of the victims are veterans. Mesothelioma is a rare and incurable cancer caused by the exposure to asbestos.

The new bill makes it so veterans who may be dealing with asbestos-cancer have to publicly disclose their private and personal information. This includes partial Social Security numbers, health records, and the location and cause of exposure. Asbestos trusts would also be required to disclose sensitive information on a public internet database.

Should the bill become law, it could cause unnecessary delays for veterans and their families, as well as other mesothelioma patients to obtain compensation from their claims.

Veterans who have developed mesothelioma as a result of asbestos exposure are often seeking compensation to help cover the costs of treatments, medical bills, and support for when they pass. The bill would require them to wait longer. Not only that, but the requirement of publicized information is a direct and offensive invasion of their privacy.
