Genetic Basis of Mesothelioma Research Allows for Better Treatment
A new study is giving mesothelioma patients hope for better and more effective treatment options. The study, co-authored by Dr. David Sugarbaker and other physician-researchers, promotes the genetic discoveries of mesothelioma to help characterize mutational profiles in mesothelioma patients.
The research yielded great results, showing numerous clinically actionable mutations. This opens the door for more therapy and treatment options that can specifically target these mutations. There are some mutations that were found in the study which available drugs and therapies can target because they exist in other malignancies.
The study discovered 10 mutated genes and upwards of 2,500 alterations.
Research found that some of the patients with more aggressive mesothelioma show presence of a protein called PD-L1. This could prove to be a target for immunotherapy pathways. In fact, Baylor College of Medicine is already conducting a trial regarding an immunotherapy that would specifically target PD-L1 in patients who have pleural mesothelioma.
