California High School Reopens Two Weeks After Contractors Disturbed Asbestos Tiles

Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, CA reopened parts of the building less than two weeks after closing those areas off when contractors disturbed asbestos tiles in a library storage room.

According to officials, the contractors used a power grinder on floor tiles containing asbestos while people, including students were collecting textbooks in the library. Recent surface and air tests found no remaining trace of asbestos in the surrounding areas, including classrooms and walkways, and displaced teachers were allowed to return to their regular classrooms on Monday, August 27.

“We are still in process of developing a plan for the library itself, and we should know more by early next week,” Superintendent Mike Matthews wrote in address to students, teachers, and parents.

The South Coast Air Quality Management District issued violation notices to general contractor KYA Group, two contractors, and the Manhattan Beach Unified School District for 27 infractions related to the disturbed floor tiles. These allegations could result in a civil fine, which will likely be worked out in a settlement agreement at a later date.

“This is an example that communities cannot identify asbestos or manage the risk on their own,” Manhattan Beach resident Linda Reinstein, who co-founded the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization during her husband’s fight with mesothelioma said in an interview with the Daily Breeze. “That’s why we as Americans need to have strong laws in place to protect public health and the environment.”
