First Week of April Recognized as National Asbestos Awareness Week by the U.S. Senate

A bipartisan group of U.S. Senators introduced a resolution that would declare the first week in April as “National Asbestos Awareness Week”. This is an incredibly important action, especially in light of the fact that recent data published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that deaths caused by asbestos are increasing across the nation (PDF).

“We are enormously thankful to Senator Tester and the 12 cosponsors for introducing the 14th ‘National Asbestos Awareness Week’,” said President and Co-Founder of the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) Linda Reinstein in a recent statement. “Each year, up to 15,000 Americans die from preventable asbestos-caused diseases while imports and use continue. Undoubtedly, the resolution’s momentum and U.S. Surgeon General’s asbestos warning will raise awareness and save lives.”

Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) is leading the efforts, and cosponsors include Senators Johnny Isakson (R-GA), Edward Markey (D-MA), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Cory Booker (D-NJ), Steve Daines (R-MT), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Kamala Harris (D-CA), Dianne Feinstein (D-RI), Dick Durbin (D-IL), and Ben Cardin (D-MD).
