In an announcement today, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated that there are certain types of laminate flooring from Lumber Liquidators that have a greater risk of causing cancer. According to the report, people who purchased the flooring were three times more likely to develop cancer.
The reason for the cancer risk is the levels of formaldehyde in various laminate flooring made by the company. The initial estimate on February 10 stated that there were roughly two to nine cancer cases for every 100,000 people. The new estimate made Monday by the CDC shows increased numbers, roughly six to 30 cases for every 100,000.
In addition to the risk of cancer, the CDC stated that people are also more susceptible to other conditions that have the availability to affect the body such as eye, nose, and throat irritation and issues with their respiratory system such as asthma.
It is advisable for individuals who have purchased these China-made flooring types to increase the ventilation to reduce the effects of the formaldehyde exposure. The U.S. Environment Protection Agency also recommends the use of humidifiers and air conditioners to help with the temperature in the home.
