Lawsuit Alleges TEPEZZA^Ⓡ Infusions Cause Permanent Hearing Loss

A lawsuit filed against TEPEZZA^Ⓡ manufacturer Horizon Therapeutics, Inc. alleges that the prescription drug causes permanent hearing damage. The case, filed out of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, states that the manufacturer failed to warn consumers about the potential harm.

What Are TEPEZZA^Ⓡ Infusions?

TEPEZZA^Ⓡ is a prescription drug used to treat eye bulging, double vision, and Thyroid Eye Disease (TED). It is manufactured by Horizon Therapeutics. It is given through infusions intravenously scheduled over the course of several sessions. 

According to its website, the drug can produce several negative side effects, most occurring within 24 hours. Symptoms that may present after taking TEPEZZA^Ⓡ may include high blood pressure, hair loss, nausea, headaches, and hearing problems. The website, however, does not address the extent or severity of the potential hearing problems. 

What Is Being Alleged in the Lawsuit?

Plaintiff Deborah Welch Klostermann has alleged that her use of TEPEZZA^Ⓡ from July 2021 to December 2021 resulted in permanent hearing damage. The complaint also alleges that the pharmaceutical company failed to warn consumers about the risks associated with using the prescription medication. 

As noted in the complaint, Horizon notified the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of at least 45 adverse-event reports in 2020 and an additional 23 the following year before Ms. Klostermann began her infusions. All of the adverse-event reports were related to ear disorders such as hearing loss, tinnitus, and hypoacusis. 

Despite receiving all of these reports related to this serious and debilitating side effect, Klostermann alleges that the manufacturer failed to relabel their product informing the public of the potential harm. Instead, the manufacturer launched an aggressive marketing campaign to increase sales of their drug.
