One-Third of Mesothelioma Patients in the U.S. are Veterans
Many military members were exposed to asbestos prior to the 1980s. Of all mesothelioma diagnoses in the nation, almost one-third of victims are servicemen and women. Veterans diagnosed with mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure should contact an attorney right away. The Veterans Administration (VA) provides special monetary benefits for veterans with asbestosis, mesothelioma cancer, and asbestos-related diseases.
Why Are Veterans Diagnosed with Mesothelioma?
Until 1979, asbestos was heavily relied upon by manufacturing companies for heat resistance and fireproofing.
Veterans who served between the years 1940 and 1980 are at the highest risk for mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases. Many of the products containing asbestos were not replaced until recently, however, so veterans who served more recently may also be at risk. Additionally, mesothelioma may take decades to develop, so veterans who served prior to the 1980s may only now be showing signs of mesothelioma.
Various branches of the military utilized asbestos in different ways, including:
- Air Force
Some examples of products and areas in which asbestos was used include:
- On-base housing
